Our Reviews
Every game we review is tested around our family table. We look at quality of components, strategic depth, age range, replay value, and most importantly: does it spark joy around the table?
Catan: The Gateway Classic
Germany | Ages 10+ | 2-4 Players | 60-90 min
Designed by Klaus Teuber in 1995, Catan transformed the board game world. Trade resources, build settlements, and compete for dominance on a modular island. Its genius lies in the trading mechanic that keeps every player engaged, even when it’s not their turn.
For families, Catan strikes a perfect balance between luck (dice rolls) and strategy (placement and negotiation). Children learn resource management, negotiation skills, and forward planning without even realising it.
Our Verdict: A must-own for every family game shelf. The definition of a modern classic.
Ticket to Ride: Europe
United States (European theme) | Ages 8+ | 2-5 Players | 30-60 min
Alan R. Moon’s masterpiece takes players on a cross-continental railway adventure. Collect cards, claim routes, and connect cities across a beautifully illustrated map of Europe. The Europe edition adds tunnels and ferries for extra strategic depth compared to the original.
This is our top recommendation for younger families. The rules take five minutes to learn, games move briskly, and the geographic theme sparks real curiosity about European cities and geography. Pure magic at the table.
Our Verdict: The best entry point into European board gaming. A game that teaches without trying.
Azul: Art of the Alhambra
Portugal (designer: Michael Kiesling, Germany) | Ages 8+ | 2-4 Players | 30-45 min
Inspired by the Portuguese azulejo tiles that adorn the walls of the Alhambra palace, Azul is as beautiful to look at as it is to play. Draft colourful tiles from shared factory displays and arrange them into scoring patterns on your personal board.
The tactile pleasure of handling the heavy, glossy tiles makes Azul irresistible for children and adults alike. Pattern recognition, spatial planning, and a healthy dose of strategic blocking make every round tense and rewarding.
Our Verdict: Stunning to look at, deeply satisfying to play. A sensory and strategic delight for the whole family.
European board games are designed to bring people together, not tear them apart. The best ones create stories you’ll retell for years.
