Catan, originally known as The Settlers of Catan, is arguably the most influential board game to come out of Europe. Designed by Klaus Teuber and first published in Germany in 1995, it has sold over 40 million copies worldwide.
What is Catan?
Catan is a resource management and trading game for 3-4 players (expandable to 6). Players collect resources — wood, brick, wheat, sheep, and ore — to build roads, settlements, and cities on a modular hex-tile board.
Gameplay
Each turn, dice are rolled to determine which tiles produce resources. Players trade with each other and use resources to expand their network. The first player to reach 10 victory points wins.
Why We Love It
Catan strikes a perfect balance between strategy and luck. The trading mechanic creates dynamic social interaction, and the modular board means every game feels different. It’s perfect for families and newcomers to modern board games.
Verdict
Rating: 9/10 — A timeless classic that belongs in every board game collection.
